Riding Master of the Flintridge Riding Club for more than 30 years, Jimmy Williams grew up riding all kinds of horses. His father was a horse dealer and race-horse owner, while his mother's family owned standardbreds.
In the army, Williams organized horse races and shows in Italy. Following the war, he went on to achieve great success riding Western horses and he had numerous cutting and stock horse champions.
Since 1954, Williams has focused on hunters and jumpers. He has trained dozens of champion horses - including famous jumpers, All Mio and Kid Shannon - but most impressive is the list of riders who were trained by Williams. Utilizing innovative training techniques, Williams became a leader in developing riding styles. USET veterans Mary Mairs Chapot, Robert Ridland, Hap Hansen, Anne Kursinski, Susan Hutchison and Mason Phelps are but a few of his former students.
Others who got their training from Williams include former American Grandprix Association Rider of the Year Rob Gage, Ronnie Freeman, Linda Hough and Ken Nordstrom. In all, 37 professional trainers got their start with Williams.
Williams was named AHSA Horseman of the Year in 1960, only the second time the award was given. A founder and director of the Pacific Coast Horse Show Association, he was the first recipient of that group's Horseman of the Year award in 1977. He also won a "Patsy" award in 1969 for his training of Albarado in the Walt Disney feature film, "The Horse in the Grey Flannel Suit." Williams' motion picture background also includes performing equestrian stunts for Tyrone Power.
A long-time member of the USET Board of Directors, Williams was USET coach in Calgary in 1978-80 and Chef d'Equipe there in 1981-82.
